Softball Squad Suffers Shutout Loss to Texas State, 6-0
SAN MARCOS, Texas - The University of Northern Colorado softball squad began its 2005 season on Friday against Texas State University and came out on the short end of a 6-0 decision in the CenturyTel Classic.
The Bears and Bobcats battled through 4 1/2 scoreless innings before Texas State came up with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, the Bears appeared ready to answer back in the top of the sixth by loading the bases. But the Bears could not come up with the clutch hit and failed to plate a run.
Texas State added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
Northern Colorado's offense tallied five hits but it was the defense that really let them down against the Bobcats. The Bears made five errors on the defensive side of the ball that contributed to a pair of unearned runs against starting pitcher Kelsey Dumler (0-1).
It was the first career pitching start for Dumler and the Greeley, Colo., native allowed only seven hits and four earned runs in the contest.
Northern Colorado will be back in action on Saturday against both Texas Tech and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
