JUELFS: 'We're the best team in Colorado!'
Editor's note: Softball senior Jamie Juelfs is the newest contributor to UNCBears.com. She will be writing weekly blog updates throughout the softball season on what exactly is going on behind the scenes with Northern Colorado softball.
“We are the best team in Colorado!”
Those were the words of senior Kailee Vessey last weekend, the day before our first game in our first fall tournament of 2010 in Fort Collins. We proved that right the next day, when we went 2-0 against Western Nebraska Community College and Colorado State!
We started the day off playing the Cougars, and we were all a little nervous for the first game of the season. At the same time, though, the feel among my teammates was surprisingly calm. One of our juniors, Erin Geddis, even said that it didn’t really feel like a game day until we stepped on the field. After that it was like a car on cruise control.
We started out neck and neck with Western Nebraska until the third inning, when we scored three runs and never looked back. We went on to win 6-3 to get our fall started right.
Next up were the Rams, our forever rivals. We all wanted to show them just how hard we had been working and how much we had improved.
But Coach Montgomery reminded us to focus on the process and the end result would take care of itself. Coach was right, as usual, and we ended up winning 2-1! It was a great feeling and a great effort from all aspects. There were great pitching performances, and our hitting was on point when we needed it. We did it as a team and we left Fort Collins as the best team in Colorado.
We were “Big Time!”
And now, with the details of our week out of the way, I want to introduce you to two members of the 2010 Northern Colorado Softball team. I'll try and do this every week, to get you all updated and informed on the great players who make up our program.
First up is Jenna Dentino, who came to us from Littleton, Colo., where she attended Chatfield High School.
Jenna has been all over the field this fall, playing almost every position. She has found a home in the outfield, though, and has also spent some time behind the plate. I asked Jenna what her favorite softball memory was up to this point in her career, and she said, "When I hit a home run over the new Chatfield fences, and my team started chanting 'That’s our freshmen!'" Hopefully the Bears will be chanting that for her soon!
Jenna is one of our freshmen this year and she is going to make a great impact on Northern Colorado softball.

Next up is Kacey Morgan. Kacey is from Aurora and went to Smoky Hill High School. She's another one of our freshmen and is adding some great talent to the pitching squad. She has great speed and movement and is going to be a force to reckon with this season and beyond.
When I asked Kacey about her favorite softball memory, she told me that it was when she made the Colorado 5A All-State team her senior year. Kacey has so much potential, and it's going to be fun to see her grow throughout her career. I also asked Kacey about what she is most excited about this season and she said, “I am so excited for the college experience and getting to know the girls.”

We will take the field again in Fort Collins this weekend at the Triple Crown Fall College Classic. We hope to see you all out and supporting us because it is just not the same without the fans. So come out and see the best team in Colorado!
