Bears softball tripped up by Miami (Ohio), San Diego State
SAN DIEGO -- Northern Colorado's softball team started the 2009 San Diego Classic II on Friday, March 13, with losses against Miami (Ohio) and San Diego State.
The Bears got strong pitching performancesin the 6-1 defeat to the RedHawks and the 5-3 setback against the Aztecs. Hillarie Van Otterloo started in the circle against Miami (Ohio) and gave up three earned runs on six hits in five innings. Courtney Maihi started the nightcap and surrendered four earned runs on six hits in five innings.
Northern Colorado (6-18) scored in the second inning against the RedHawks on an RBI single from senior Katelyn Landorf and maintained that advantage all the way until the sixth inning, when a six-run Miami (Ohio) outburst put the game away.
The Bears then let San Diego State score twice in the third and fifth innings and a single run in the sixth before staging a rally with a run of their own in the sixth and a pair in the seventh to make things interesting.
Northern Colorado struck for 10 hits against the Aztecs starter Bailey Micetich, but Micetich struck out nine Bears in her 6.2 innings of work to minimize the damage.
Northern Colorado returns to the San Diego diamond Saturday morning, March 14, with a single game against the Connecticut Huskies.
