Men's Tennis completes fall season-opener at Drake Invitational

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Northern Colorado men's tennis team finished up its fall season-opener at the Drake Invitational on Sunday. The Bears were one of seven teams taking part in the three-day tournament at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

"This team has unlimited potential," said Head coach Mike Phillips. "We played well, but more importantly the team competed so hard and always with great integrity."

Hitting the court in the A Flight Singles was Mitchel Knight, Ben Gendron, Austin Mayo and Jordan Loughnan. Each won a match with a win total of five.

Knight won his first match of the weekend against Motasam Al-Houni of Gustavus Adolphus 6-1, 5-7, 11-9. The Tusla, Okla., native went on to lose the next two 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-0. Teammate Mayo also won his first match, coming against Brad Entwistle of GA 6-22, 5-7, 10-6. He then took down Elliot Baker of Creighton 6-4, 7-5 before losing the next two matches. The Austin, Texas native lost his next two 6-2, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-3.

Gendron fell in the opening match 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 to a Drake opponent. Gendron then came out and took down Joe MacGibbon of GA 6-1, 6-4. Jake Norman of Creighton ended Gendron's weekend with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Loughnan fell 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 to start off singles action beforing advancing on a walkover. Grant Leisner of GA and Vinh Pham both beat Loughnan to finish.

Eric Schuermans, Jeff Carlson, Jacob Sheldon and Michael Moya took part in B Flight Singles. They each won a match and totaled four.

Schuermans opened B singles action by beating Matt Baker of GA 6-1, 7-5. He then fell in consecutive matches. Carlson also won his first match 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 against Quinn Dippel of Creighton. Conner Edwards ended Carlson's weekend with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 loss.

Sheldon and Moya both finished 1-2 over the weekend. Sheldon's win came in the second round of the consolation bracket against Logan Peterson of GA 6-4, 6-4. Moya's win came in the first round against Mitchell Elofson of GA 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.

"We need a few adjustments working on attacking in singles but we will spend most of this week focusing on doubles," said Phillips.

In doubles, the Bears athletes totaled a 2-7 record. The duos of Knight and Mayo, and Gendron and Loughnan recorded a win in A Flight Doubles. Knight and Mayo first fell in the opening match but came back with a 8-3 win over Missiouri-Kansas City's Conner Edwards and Jai Grewal 8-3. Gendron and Loughnan won their opener against Ryan McGuigan and Connor Oberle of North Dakota 8-4.

Carlson and Moya, and Schuermans and Sheldon both couldn't get momentum going in doubles action. Both doubles pairs went 0-2 in B Flight Doubles.

The Bears team will be competing next on Friday, Sept. 27 throught Sunday, Sept. 29 at the Creighton Invitational.
