Men's tennis posts several quality wins
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Both Northern Colorado men’s tennis players Michael Moya and Robbie Edwards posted winning records at the Balloon Fiesta, hosted by the University of New Mexico over the weekend.
“This is always a quality tournament,” said Head Coach Tim Bearman. “The competition is great at the Balloon Fiesta Tournament. As a team, the guys competed extremely well and we had some quality wins over some good programs. Anytime you can come away from a tournament knowing that you competed with success against some of the top programs in the country, it’s a momentum builder for the program.”
Moya, a freshman from Whittier, Calif., posted a record of 3-1 in the tournament. He won his first round in straight sets over Western New Mexico’s Roy Ulibarri, then fell in the round of 16 to Air Force’s Sam Barnes, 7-5, 6-2. In the North section of the backdraw, Moya defeated Mike Tope from Air Force, 6-0, 6-2 and won a three-set thriller over New Mexico’s Simon Hegelund, 6-0, 1-6, 7-5. He did not compete in the finals due to travel arrangements.
“Michael Moya continues to impress as he gutted out a tough victory against a strong player from the University of New Mexico,” said Bearman.
Edwards, a sophomore from Aloha, Ore., went 2-1 in the tournament in the ‘B’ draw of singles. He lost his opening round match 6-2, 6-2 to Steven Young from Air Force, but bounced back to win the next two over Western New Mexico tennis players in the West backdraw. Again, Edwards did not play in the finals due to timing.
“Robbie Edwards played some of his best tennis as a Bear,” said Bearman.
In the ‘A’ singles section, both sophomore Brandon Lupo and freshman Jeff Carlson posted 1-2 records. Lupo defeated Denver’s Varun Gunaseelan, 6-3, 6-1 in the finals of the Southwest draw, while Carlson’s victory came over NMMI’s Jiri Zelinka in the quarterfinals of the West backdraw.
In doubles play, junior Andre Lepine and Lupo paired up to finish with a 2-1 mark, winning the finals in the south draw after falling in the opening set.
The men’s tennis team concludes the fall season Oct. 29-23 at the ITA Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev.
