The University of Northern Colorado men's golf team begins the 2006-07 season by competing in the 38th Annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational held at the Eisenhower Blue Course at the Academy on Sept.9-10.
The Bears finished sixth of out 17 teams at the event last season, as Kyle Sullivan placed 12th with a score of +4. Air Force won last year's team competition.
This year's field includes 19 teams. They are: Air Force, Air Force J.V., California, Colorado State, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Nevada, New Mexico "B", Northern Iowa, Southern Utah, Colorado-Colorado Springs, Utah, Utah State, UTEP, Utah Valley State, Weber State, Wyoming and Xavier.
Last Time Out
Northern Colorado wrapped up the 2006-07 season by claiming the 2006 Division I Independent Men's Golf Championship held at Pelican Lakes Golf & Country Club April 28-30, 2006. In the first annual event, Northern Colorado trailed Francis Marion by five strokes after day one, was one stroke up after day two and ended up winning the event by eight strokes over South Dakota State, who had a tournament low score of 282 on the final day to finish second.
Eric Higgins (-1) finished third at the event while Tim Knight and Jordan Ensrud tied for sixth (+3). Other Northern Colorado finishers included Tom Gempel (12th, +7) and Kyle Sullivan (14th, +8). Following the season Knight (first-team), Higgins (second-team), Jon Stecher (second-team) and Jordan Ensrud (All-Newcomer team) were selected to the Division I All-Independent squad.
Northern Colorado finished the 2005-06 season ranked 102nd nationally out of 292 total Division I teams by Golfweek. The Bears were ranked 99th at the end of the fall season, and were 93rd following the 2004-05 season. Golfweek rankings for 2006-07 have not been released yet.
The Bears will compete at the Purple and Red Invitational, hosted by the University of Utah and Weber State University, and held in Layton, Utah on Sept. 18-19.
