GLENCOE, Ill. - The University of Northern Colorado men's golf team is fifth after round one of the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern and held at Skokie Country Club. Round two play was almost complete before being suspended by darkness.
After the first round the Bears were just 10 strokes behind leader Michigan State and three strokes behind in-state rival Colorado and Kent State, who were tied for third. After playing most of round two, the Bears had slipped back to ninth place overall but were just six strokes out of third place overall. CU had assumed the second round lead before play was suspended.
Junior Eric Higgins was the best of the Northern Colorado golfers on day one, shooting an even par round of 71 in the morning to rank third overall. Higgins was +5 for the second round and will start Monday's final round in ninth place overall, somewhere near six strokes behind the leader (depending on what happens in the conclusion of the second round).
Sophomore Jordan Ensrud had a first round 75 (+4) and was in a similar position nearing the end of round two. He is unofficially 16th, tied with teammate Kyle Sullivan who had a 77 (+6) in the morning round before shooting an impressive 73 (+2) in the second round.
Senior Jon Stecher had a round of 77 (+6) in the morning and was unofficially 45th in the second round through 15 holes. Junior Tom Gempel was +6 in the morning and +9 in the afternoon and is 51st overall.
The suspended round two will finish play at 7:45 a.m. CT on Monday and the third and final round is slated to tee off around 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Living scoring can be accessed at UNCBears.com.
