Greeley – The Northern Colorado men’s golf team added a pair of academic honors to their 2012 resume, earning the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) 2012 Team Academic Award, while two freshmen were named to the America Sky Men’s Golf All-Academic Team.

To qualify for GCAA all-academic recognition, a team must have a combined GPA of 3.0 or better. A total of 125 teams earned the prestigious honor, with DePaul landing the highest overall GPA with a 3.69. Northern Colorado and Denver were the only Colorado universities at the Division I or II level to receive the award this year.

In addition to the GCAA nod, Steven Kupcho (Accounting) and Charlie Mroz (Business Management) earned a spot on the 2012 American Sky All-Academic Team.

To qualify for American Sky academic honors, student-athletes must post a GPA of 3.2 or better during the year. This year’s team features 47 honorees – the most in league history.

“I’m proud to see that 47 America Sky student-athletes have overcome the demands put on them by the sport and have achieved this level of success in the classroom,” said America Sky Commissioner Ed Grom.

The award caps off a sizzling summer for Kupcho, who finished as the top amateur at the HealthONE Colorado open on July 29. The sophomore-to-be was also named the America Sky Newcomer of the Year this past spring after placing top-25 in five events as a freshman.

“I’m extremely proud of our guys’ effort, not just on the course, but in the classroom,” said head coach Chuck Scheinost. “It was great to see them push each other academically. We have a great group and this is another testament to that.”

Kupcho, Mroz and the rest of the Bears are back on campus August 27 as they begin classes and gear up for the fall season.
