Men's Basketball Team Adds Rutgers to 2003-04 Schedule
Oct. 20, 2003
GREELEY, Colo.- The University of Northern Colorado men's basketball team added its ninth Division I opponent for the 2003-04 season on Monday, as it finalized plans to travel to Piscataway, N.J. to battle Rutgers University on Feb. 17.
The Bears and the Scarlet Knights will meet at 7:30 p.m. eastern time at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in the first match-up ever between the two programs. Rutgers was 12-16 overall last season and 10-6 at home including a 68-65 victory over eventual national champion Syracuse.
"It is truly exciting to add another high-caliber team from one of the top conferences in the country to our schedule," said UNC head coach Craig Rasmuson. "It will be a great challenge for our kids and will be a great learning tool for us to evaluate where our program is growing to for the future."
The game replaces the Feb. 10 contest that was scheduled at Johnson & Wales in Denver.
The addition of the Rutgers game brings UNC's number of Division I games to nine this year. Those opponents are: Colorado, Colorado State (exhibition), Denver, Iowa State, Loyola Marymount, Eastern Michigan, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State and Rutgers. UNC also battles Utah Valley State in a home-and-home series (the Wolverines are also in the reclassification process to Division I) and finishes the season at the National Provisional Tournament.
UNC's season starts on Nov. 17 when they travel to Fort Collins to play Colorado State in an exhibition contest that starts at 7 p.m.
