Olson and Panagiotakopoulos Named to D-I Independent All-Academic Team

GREELEY, Colo. - University of Northern Colorado senior Erik Olson and sophomore Thanasi Panagiotakopoulos were two of 12 total selections to the 2005-06 Division I Independent Men's Basketball All-Academic team as announced on Wednesday.
Olson, who has a 3.54 GPA in marketing, was a repeat selection to the team. He finished his career at Northern Colorado by becoming the first person in school history to record 850 or more points, 550 or more rebounds, 150 or more assists and 120 or more steals. He ranked in the program's career top-10 in games played (112), steals (123) and rebounds (573). In 2005-06, he averaged 6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 29 games, 27 of which he started.
Panagiotakopoulos, who has a 3.94 GPA in management, averaged 3.5 points and 2.0 assists per game in 20 contests. The sophomore from Phoenix started three games this season, including at Northern Arizona where he scored a career-high 19 points in 33 minutes of action in front of a large contingent of family and friends. He hit on 8-of-11 shots (3-of-5 from 3-point range) in that game. He dished out a career-high five assists in a game at Oregon State during the season as well.
The D-I Independent Men's Basketball All-Academic team was selected by sports information directors at member institutions. Two nominations from each school were accepted for student-athletes who had at least a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A., had reached at least a sophomore academic standing and were a starter or key reserve for the team.
Division I Independent men's basketball teams include UC Davis, IPFW, Longwood, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Savannah State, South Dakota State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley State.
