Northern Colorado guard Devon Beitzel and Northern Arizona center Kyle Landry and have been selected the Co-Big Sky Conference men's basketball players of the week for games played between Jan. 9-Jan. 13.
Beitzel, a 6-foot freshman from Lafayette, Colo., came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points with a career-high four steals in Northern Colorado's shocking upset of San DiegoState 62-56 on Wednesday night. Beitzel played 20 minutes, hitting 7-of-12 field goals. He made one 3-pointer, and had two rebounds. Northern Colorado snapped a 12-game road losing streak, and ended San DiegoState's 13-game home winning streak. San DiegoState entered the game with an 11-3 record and an RPI of 33. Beitzel is the first Northern Colorado men's basketball player to win Big Sky Player of the Week honors.
Landry, a 6-foot-9 senior from Calgary, Alberta, averaged 26 points and 10 rebounds per game, and scored his 1,000th career point in leading the Lumberjacks to conference victories over Montana and MontanaState. Landry scored a career-high 27 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and had two steals in NAU's 72-64 win over Montana on Thursday. Landry scored 17 points in the second half, helping the Lumberjacks rally from a nine-point halftime deficit. Landry netted 25 points with nine rebounds, three blocks and a steal in NAU's 78-58 win over MontanaState on Sunday. In that game, Landry became the 22nd player in Northern Arizona history to score 1,000 career points. Landry now has 1,016 career points. For the week, Landry shot 50 percent from the floor and .750 percent from the free-throw line.
