Men's Basketball set to open home schedule against Colorado Christian
Northern Colorado notes | Big Sky notes
GREELEY -- The Northern Colorado men's basketball team put up an impressive game in its previous win at Kansas State, and will now have a chance to show its home fans those talents.
The Bears will play host to the Cougars of Colorado Christian at 7:05 p.m. in the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. UNC and CCU hold an even all-time series record at 5-5 with the most recent matchup coming as a 89-68 Bears win on Nov. 21, 2006.
UNC's leading scorers a season ago did it again in the team's season opener, as seniors Derrick Barden (Detroit, Mich.) and Tate Unruh (Branson, Mo.) were the top two scorers with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Barden also pulled down a game-high and career-high 17 rebounds. Freshman Jordan Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif.) came off the bench to score eight points in his collegiate debut.
The season opening win came in a tale of two halves. The Bears showed the rust of a new season as the team turned the ball over on its first three possessions. Turnovers and fouls plagued the entire first half as the Bears totaled 10 turnovers and allowed Kansas State to take 16 free throw shots. The Wildcats converted just seven of the 16, though, to keep the Bears' deficit at 29-24 at halftime.
Barden, Unruh, Wilson, and Tim Huskisson (Willard, Mo.) scored more points in the second half than the entire team did in the first. Each had at least seven points, which guided the Bears to the lead with under a minute to play. The Bears converted late free throws to finish the game with the 60-58 win.
