Beitzel adds another academic honor
GREELEY -- Northern Colorado senior guard Devon Beitzel was named Thursday to his third CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
Beitzel, an All-District 7 honoree in 2009 and 2010 who later earned Academic All-America status last year, is joined on this year's Capital One District 7 first team by Colorado's Levi Knutson, Denver's Chase Hallam, Kansas' Tyrel Reed and Missouri State's Will Creekmore.
Beitzel, already one of 10 finalists for this year's Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, finished fall semester 2010 with a 3.69 GPA in Finance & Accounting and is the second leading scorer (19.1 points per game) in the Big Sky Conference. He's the only Big Sky men's basketball player included on Thursday's announcement and joins Northern Colorado women's player Kaisha Brown, who was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 women's basketball third team.
To be eligible for selection to the CoSIDA team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility and be a starter or important reserve on his/her team. The student-athlete also must have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) and have participated in at least 50 percent of his/her team's games.
CoSIDA District 7 includes teams from Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
Beitzel's name will now be moved into the CoSIDA Academic All-American pool, where he could become a back-to-back winner and join previous Northern Colorado Academic All-American Derek Chaney (1994).
