Beitzel earns fourth career Big Sky POTW
OGDEN, Utah -- Northern Colorado senior Devon Beitzel was selected Monday as last week's Big Sky Conference men's basketball player of the week after leading the Bears to an impressive road sweep to open conference play.
Beitzel, a 6-foot-1 guard from Lafayette, Colo., averaged 24.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, three assists and one steal per game last week as Northern Colorado notched road wins against Portland State and Eastern Washington, marking the first time the program has swept a conference road trip since joining the league in 2006-07 and just the third time any Big Sky team has swept that trip in the last three seasons.
Beitzel shot 60.7 percent from the floor against the Vikings and Eagles, 50 percent from three-point range and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line, bringing his season mark at the stripe to 94.9 -- the second best in the NCAA.
He opened with 26 points, four rebounds, three assists and a block in the Bears' 79-66 win against Portland State on Wednesday night, Dec. 29. That win was Northern Colorado's first ever at the Stott Center. Beitzel shot nine of 15 from the floor, three of five from three-point range and made five of six free-throws attempts.
Beitzel then scored 23 points with three rebounds, three assists and a steal in the Bears' 75-73 win against Eastern Washington on Friday, Dec. 31. He made eight of 13 from the field against the Eagles, was two of five from beyond the arc, and five of six from three-point range.
Beitzel has scored at least 20 points in five straight games for Northern Colorado and leads the Big Sky in scoring at 19.8 points per game and free-throw shooting.
