OGDEN, Utah -- For the second time this season, Northern Colorado guard Devon Beitzel has been selected as the Big Sky Conference's men’s basketball player of the week.
Beitzel, a 6-foot-1, junior from Lafayette, Colo., scored a team-high 24 points with five assists in the Bears’ 93-69 home victory over San Jose State on Monday, Dec. 21. He also had three rebounds and two steals to earn his second weekly honor this season after doing so in late November, following the Bears' stampede through Air Force's Reggie Minton Classic, of which he was tabbed as MVP.
Against the Spartans last Monday, Beitzel hit eight of 10 field goals, six of eight from 3-point range, and connected on two of four free throws. It all helped Northern Colorado establish a school record for 3-pointers made in a game with 18 and improve the Bears to 10-3 this season, their best start since 1988-89, when they won 10 of their first 12.
Beitzel scored 27 points in a loss to San Jose State last season, making a school-record 12 field goals in the process. In his two games against San Jose State, Beitzel is 20 of 24 from the field, and nine of 12 from 3-point range.
Northern Colorado plays against instate-rival Denver at 7:05
tonight inside Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. A certain level of
bragging rights are on the line in the game, as both teams have
risen to the top of most of the state's collegiate basketball
discussions. DU brings the second-best shooting percentage in the
country into the game (53 percent), while Northern Colorado enters
with the 10th-most free-throws made in the country (243) and
18th-most three-pointers (107).
