Beitzel earns academic all-district notice

GREELEY, Colo. -- Northern Colorado sophomore guard Devon Beitzel was named today to the 2009 CoSIDA District 7 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team. Beitzel is the only student-athlete from the Bears' winter sports team to earn the honor.

To be eligible for selection to the CoSIDA team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility and be a starter or important reserve on his/her team. The student-athlete also must have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) and have participated in at least 50 percent of his/her team's games.

CoSIDA District 7 includes teams from Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Beitzel's name will now be moved into the CoSIDA Academic All-American pool, where he could become Northern Colorado first men's basketball academic all-American since Derek Chaney (1989-94) was named to the third team in 1994.

Beitzel (Lafayette, Colo.) finished fall semester 2008 with a 3.85 GPA in business finance. He comes into Northern Colorado's Big Sky contest tonight against Weber State as the Bears' second leading scorer (12.0 ppg) this season and leader in three-pointers attempted (4.5/game) and three-pointers made (1.9/game).

He tied a Northern Colorado NCAA Division I-record with 32 points earlier this season against Northern Arizona and later scored a DI-record 115 points in five games between Dec. 18 and 29.

Beitzel, who has started 17 of the Bears' 23 games this season, is also the program's DI single-game record holder in FGs, FTs made, FTs attempted and FTs made without a miss.
