Coach Scott Downing Quotes
"I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to coach at the University of Northern Colorado. I hope to be a part of this community, this university and this program for years to come. I think we have a great vision here, and a great opportunity ahead of us in the Big Sky Conference."
"We are excited for the Big Sky Conference and a full Big Sky schedule next season. We are now in the first quarter of our preparation for next season, and that starts next week with our off-season lifting program. I believe our young men will be diligent in preparing for next season."
"I have come here with a vision. I can assure you that there are very few universities out there that have the same opportunities as we have ahead of us here at Northern Colorado. The sky is the limit. We are a sleeping giant. It will be a lot of work, but it will be a lot of fun as well."
"We are working very hard, but I am having so much fun right now that they are going to have to surgically remove the smile from my face."
On His New Assistant Coaches
"Each of these men have great vision, great enthusiasm and great knowledge to bring to our staff and to our players. All three of them are also great recruiters."
On Offensive Coordinator Chad Brown
"I have known Chad for many years. He has great integrity and is a great family man and I have the utmost respect for him. He will be our quarterbacks coach and will also be calling the plays on Saturday's."
On Defensive Coordinator Cody Deti
"Cody's family name is a legend in high school football in the state of Wyoming. He comes from a long line of successful coaches and knows what it means to be a football coach. He is a great technician and great with the x's and o's of defensive football. He is hard-working, energetic and will be a great leader for our defense. He is the type of guy who won't stop working until he gets it done."
On Assistant Coach Darrell Perkins
"Darrell will be an assistant on the defensive side of the ball with us. He is a stand-up guy who is smart and hard-working. As a player, it did not matter whether he has hurt or not or where he was on the depth chart, he always gave his best. He is a native of the area and that will have an immediate impact with our recruiting in the Denver area."
On Retaining Assistant Coach Keith Grable
"Keith is a great addition to our staff. He has been a great resource to me in my short time here and has been up for everything I have asked of him. I cannot say enough about him and our two graduate assistants, Jared Wallen and Ahmad Lowe."
On the 2006 Schedule
"It will be the first time we have played a full compliment of I-AA football. It will be a challenge, starting with UC Davis off the bat. Then we have to go to Portland State in the second game, opening our conference season on the road. It will also be a great challenge to play against Texas State, who was an I-AA semifinalist this past season. And near the end of the year, it will be exciting to play Montana State and Montana. We should have our players and staff all on the same page by that point."
"The players are looking forward to playing against this schedule and working hard in preparing to play against it."
On His Team's Offensive Style of Play
"Our style of play will be dictated by the West Coast Offense. That is not to be a misnomer in that we will be have a shootout style of offense all the time. The West Coast Offense is flexible and will allow us to take advantage of our opponent's weaknesses and take advantage of our strengths."
"There is great talent in the state of Colorado, and we will build with Colorado players. But we will also supplement that talent with players from out-of-state. We have three important recruiting weekends coming up and we will probably be looking to sign 15-17 or maybe even 20 players on National Signing Day."
