Postgame Notes - Northern Colorado at No. 23 Texas State

  • Head coach Scott Downing picked up his first victory as a Bear.

  • Northern Colorado is now 2-1 all-time against the Southland Conference.

  • Northern Colorado picked up its first win over a ranked opponent since 2003, when they defeated then-No. 20 Montana State 14-10.

  • Saturday's 14-13 win was Northern Colorado's first one-point win since Sept. 17, 1994, when the Bears beat former North Central Conference foe Augustana 17-16.

  • The Bears have had less penalties than their opponents in every game this season. Northern Colorado opponents have committed 35 penalties for 297 yards, while the Bears have had 20 for 147 yards.

  • Senior defensive tackle Jacob Carlson's sack of Texas State's Bradley George in the third quarter was Northern Colorado's first of the season. It was also his first solo sack since the 2004 season.

  • The Bears are 1-1 in games on an artificial playing surface, although both games had different turf. Portland State's PGE Park had NexTurf, which is more of the old-style artifical turf. Texas State's Bobcat Stadium had AstroPlay, which is more similar to artifical grass.

  • Senior defensive end Matt West's returned blocked punt for a touchdown was the first non-offensive touchdown by the Bears since 2004.

  • Northern Colorado is now 6-11-1 all-time against teams from Texas.

  • Although Texas State rushed for 113 net yards, the Bears still have not allowed a 100-yard rusher this season.

  • T.J. Swanson's 37-yard reception from junior quarterback Dominic Breazeale was the longest Northern Colorado pass play this season.

  • Jason Hildenbrand's 51-yard punt was the longest for Northern Colorado this season.

  • Patrick Ealy's seven receptions was the second time this season he led Northern Colorado in catches.

  • Texas State is one of two teams named the Bobcats Northern Colorado has on its schedule this season. The Bears are set to take on the Montana State Bobcats Nov. 4.

  • Joe Kenney's interception in the fourth quarter was the first Northern Colorado pick this season.

  • Saturday's crowd of 11,870 was the largest crowd Northern Colorado has played in front of so far this season.
