PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Sports Network announced Thursday the 20 players on the initial 18th annual Buchanan Watch List and Northern Colorado junior linebacker Clarence Bumpas has been included.
Bumpas is one of two Big Sky Conference players on the watch list, alongside defensive tackle Zach Minter of Montana State.
A season ago, Bumpas ranked fourth nationally in tackles per game with 12.18 and finished with 145 total tackles, the most by a Bear since the team joined the Division I ranks. He has already been named to the Big Sky Conference Preseason All-Conference Team and to the Second-Team Preseason All-America team by The Sports Network.
Earlier this week, he was the Bears’ representative at the Big Sky Conference Summer Kickoff, visiting with media about his desire to help Northern Colorado win games.
“If it takes me getting less tackles this season for us to be successful,” said Bumpas. “Then so be it. We’re ready to take a step in the right direction and I’m willing to do whatever necessary to help that. The awards are nice for my family, but I just want to keep having a nose for the ball and help Northern Colorado win.”
The Buchanan Award Watch List can undergo revision during the 2012 season. Ballots will be sent to a panel of about 175 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season on Nov. 19. The top three vote-getters will be invited to The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation.
The Sports Network also presents the Walter Payton, Jerry Rice and Eddie Robinson awards. The Payton Award honors the FCS player of the year, the Rice Award goes to the FCS freshman of the year and the Robinson Award honors the FCS coach of the year.
