Football Picked Eighth In Big Sky Preseason Polls

OGDEN, Utah - In the 2009 Big Sky Conference preseason football polls, the Northern Colorado team has been picked to finish eighth by both the coaches and media, while Montana was chosen to win the league's title by both groups.

The Bears, who finished tied for eighth last season with a 1-10 record, showed marked improvement from the 2007 season and hope to continue making strides in the right direction. This season's team returns 16 starters from the 2008 squad as well as 39 letterwinners.

Northern Colorado faces a tough schedule, playing five teams ranked in different FCS polls, as well as Kansas, picked to finish second in the Big 12 North. For the first time in head coach Scott Downing's tenure the team plays more games at home, hosting six teams.

Montana, who lost in the championship game of the FCS playoffs, was picked to win the league title by both the media and coaches, while Weber State, which was the co-champion a year ago, was picked to finish second. Eastern Washington is listed third in the coaches poll and fourth in the media poll, while Montana State is just the opposite getting picked third by the media and fourth by the coaches.

Picks five through nine were the same by both the media and coaches, as Northern Arizona is fifth, Portland State sixth, Sacramento State seventh, the Bears eighth and Idaho State has been picked ninth.

The team reports for camp on August 6 with the season beginning Sept. 5 at Kansas.
