The Bears bring on Cummings to be the new special teams coordinator.
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado football head coach Earnest Collins Jr. added new personnel to his staff in Bryan Cummings.
Collins announced that he has hired Cummings as the Bears' new special teams coordinator. Last season Collins handled all head coaching duties along with running the special teams.
Cummings coached at fellow FCS program Alabama A&M during the 2014 season where he was the special teams coordinator and also handled defensive line responsibilities.
In his one season with the Bulldogs, the team finished 15th in the nation in net punt yards, 13th in punt returns and he improved field goal percentages from 40% in 2013 to 82.4% in 2014.
"For me as a head coach, I brought Bryan in to completely take over special teams and run it the way it needs to be ran," said Collins. "He runs his drills and he runs his meetings like I want it to be ran. There's no wasted time, he's precise and our special teams is going to improve tremendously with him calling the shots and it's going to be great."
Prior to his stint with Alabama A&M, Cummings was at Texas A&M where he served as a special teams quality control assistant, during the Johnny Manziel era.
He handled all film break down, scouting reports, opponent game plan, game-day checklists, and coordinated all special team scout units.
"This is a great opportunity for me," said Cummings. "To coach on a football team in an elite FCS conference like the Big Sky is tremendous. Obviously this team has had some struggles on special teams, but I see it as an opportunity to come in and really change some things and try and help this team return to its former glory and win a championship."
Cummings began his coaching career in 2008 at the high school level, coaching various positions at Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York.
The new special teams coordinator was also a stand out linebacker at the University of Buffalo from 2002-2005. He was a four year starter, won the Bulls Coach's Award, was a MAC Leadership Award Nominee, and ended with his career ranked nationally in three defensive categories.
