Greeley — The University of Northern Colorado Department of Athletics will improve the gameday experience for fans with upgrades that include the latest technology from the leading manufacturer of large video displays.

The projects at Nottingham Field and Butler-Hancock Athletic Center are scheduled to be finished by the start of the fall sports season next month.

Installation of the new video scoreboard at Nottingham Field is already underway. The new structure will be 32-by-45-foot with a 16-by-28-foot LED video board that has capabilities for live action video and instant replays at home football games.

Butler-Hancock will receive similar displays. Two 8-by-15-foot boards will be placed on the northeast and southwest corners of the gym, where the Bears’ basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams compete. In the aquatics center, a new 11-by-9-foot scoreboard will feature an upgraded timing and scoring system for swimming and diving competitions.

“We are truly excited to add these state-of-the-art systems,” said Darren Dunn, UNC director of Athletics. “These large boards will add tremendous entertainment value and further enhance our new gameday environment for our fans as well as be a recruiting tool for our coaches.”

UNC purchased the displays from industry leader Daktronics, which has designed and manufactured systems for college and professional venues worldwide, including Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver.

The $984,000 project, which will be funded through external sources, is part of planned improvements to Athletics’ facilities as part of ongoing initiatives to transform the gameday atmosphere at home events. Beginning this fall, enhanced tailgating options at football games will include live music, fun activities and games for kids.

“There have been many people involved in this project,” Dunn said. “I am very appreciative of this UNC collaborative project and especially thankful for the sponsors and donors who are helping make this project happen.”
